Indoor Microclimate Maps

Rob Dunn Lab | Projects

These maps illustrate the similarity between the indoor climate of your home and the 2012 outdoor climate of places on Earth with land (i.e. not open ocean/water). Here we considered climate to be a function of air temperature and air moisture, variables that you recorded inside your homes.

We averaged these two variables by season (Winter and Spring) and compared each home to many sections of Earth (we split the land covered areas of Earth into 67,420 sections). We calculated the similarity of your indoor home climate and the outdoor global climate for each section of Earth. We then identified the Earth sections that were the closest climate match to your home; the top one percent (674 sections). These maps show the most similar, top 1% sections in red, and the next most similar in purple continuing until least similar in yellow.
